“This album took two years to create and has changed into many beasts along the way,” read the liner notes (aka the sheet of ultra-thin printed vellum the CD comes wrapped in) for Pop Pistol’s debut album. If you listen closely, you can feel the prolonged birthing process in the music and begin to get the sense that every measure’s been fretted over, each note tweaked until it resonates exactly the way the band wanted it to.

Live, Pop Pistol’s firepower comes mainly from frontman Alex Scheel’s meticulously noisy guitar-playing. Scheel generates feedback with the same precision others play a glockenspiel and mashes effects pedals like his guitar’s hiding out from the mafia. On several songs on Angelus, however, the guitar sounds more like a second fiddle to ethereal keyboards (played by Scheel and bassist George Garza) and glitchy electronic sampling (credited to Scheel, Garza, and Gonzalez). “Purple Eyes,” “Angela Asleep,” and “IO” match Scheel’s emotive voice to unfeeling bloops and malfunctioning drum machines for an effect reminiscent of Thom Yorke’s Eraser. But the ax (wielded more like a scalpel) cuts through the more visceral tracks: “All Heat and No Head,” “Calm Little Center,” and “Influential Devil” all rock like they predate the PowerBook — studied, melodic guitar playing and knotty low end. The best songs on Angelus, though, are cyborgs. “Angela Awake,” “Triggers,” and “Jealousy Dance” meld live instrumentation with technology to form a cogent transhuman whole. Most impressively though, all of it — Scheel’s overdubbed guitars and multi-tracked vocal harmonizing, Garza’s intricate bass lines, two guys playing keyboards and three guys twiddling knobs — serves the songs. There’s not a sample out of place or a superfluous effect to be found. Those two years sound well spent. — Jeremy Martin, San Antonio Current

It was a long process that took over two years to make complete. When we started there was an image : shaking cities and running through walls and moving focal points and square purple rooms and dying cities riding on skin and slow waltzes and moving red lights of youth and ambition towards thing expansive and giant valleys and tiny radios and distant voices and bloody fingers and knife eyes and last days of teenage and fear of closeness and distance and weak screams towards death and singular perspective and fast inside something slow inside something fast and wrapping around of each other and Japanese dreams and invisible cities and emersion. And something not understood and escape. These were just ideas and we just played music. The music changed and fluctuated and we moved away and near . I don’t know why it took so long but it was all those things and we couldn’t and shouldn’t escape from those things. Now we want to put it out to float in the world like tiny paper ships in a sea of consciousness. They are small and mean nothing and can barely be seen from distance, but they are outside us and inside someone else which is worth the jet streams. We hope to make many more of these ships much more naturally and with more speed through time. Here are images of what is going on right now. Images of shadows and fabric and light speed and distance and dirt floors and fire and circles and spirals and hexagons and foggy mirrors and skies scraping and luna dancing and mars squinting and multiple perspective and outside living and points and waves and movement and girl circuits and mitote and pink noise and rose lenses. , and things I forget. Thank you to everyone that has helped us get any of this done . If any of yall didn’t exist we would be still kicking cans waiting for our lives to start.
